Editing Health Content for Localization
For this localization editing project, I revised a Mayo Clinic article on first aid for choking. I focused on removing unclear language, especially for specific instructions/body movements.
The revisions I made show that I know what kind of phrases and sentences non-native English speakers would potentially find confusing, as well as what language would pose a challenge for later translation efforts.
For example, I removed and replaced words or phrases with multiple common meanings, such as “when a foreign object lodges,” “choking cuts off oxygen,” and “skin that is flushed.”
My editing choices were based on peer-reviewed research, technical writing texts, and personal analysis of ESOL-friendly content. This demonstrates I can apply technical communication theory to flexible editing strategies when preparing documents for non-native English speakers.
